Board Game Geek Rating: 6.52. Avg Player Rating: 7.79. Suitable for 2 to 5 players and published in 2017. This is the retail (third) edition of the award - winning Catacombs cooperative board game set in the fantasy world of Cimathue. It's a fast - paced game that requires skill and dexterity.
One player acts as the Overseer, controlling an army of monsters. The other players choose from six brave heroes on a quest to save the town of Stormtryne from the threats in the catacombs. As the heroes explore, they use their abilities, buy items, and recruit allies to defeat the monsters before facing the powerful Catacomb Lord.
In the game, players flick wooden discs representing monsters and heroes. Contact with an opposing piece deals damage, and missiles, spells, and special abilities have other effects. Once all monsters in a room are cleared, heroes can advance deeper into the catacombs.
Heroes can buy item and equipment upgrades from the Merchant using gold from fallen monsters. The Catacomb Lord is the final challenge for heroes to win. The Overseer wins if all heroes are defeated.
This third edition features all - new artwork. More importantly, it replaces keywords from the first two editions with iconography, changes terminology, and has new shot types, card effects, and a different set of components (many with changed statistics) and wall pieces not in earlier editions.

How to play: First, decide who will be the Overseer and who will be the heroes. The Overseer controls the monsters, and the heroes work together to save the town. You'll flick wooden discs to represent actions in the game. When a hero's disc hits a monster's disc, it inflicts damage. Use missiles, spells, and special abilities to your advantage. After clearing all monsters in a room, move the heroes deeper into the catacombs.
Buy item and equipment upgrades from the Merchant with gold obtained from defeated monsters. Your goal as a hero is to defeat the Catacomb Lord. The Overseer wins if all heroes are defeated.
Note: Make sure to read the new rules of the third edition carefully as it has changes in terminology, shot types, and card effects compared to earlier editions.
Maintenance: Keep the wooden discs and other components clean and dry. Store the game in a cool, dry place to prevent damage to the cards and pieces.
