Board Game Geek Rating: 5.49. Avg Player Rating: 6.06. For 1 - 5 players, published in 2019. This is the Kickstarter 'Unspeakable' Pledge for Cthulhu: Death May Die by CMON. It includes the Core Game, the exclusive 'Julia' Investigator, and all unlocked stretch goals. Note: paid add - ons from the Kickstarter Campaign are not included unless stated otherwise. In this game inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, you and other players are 1920s investigators. Instead of stopping the Elder Gods, you aim to summon them and defeat them for good. You start insane. Your long - term goal is to 'shoot Cthulhu in the face'. During the game, improper dice rolls can trigger your insanity, leading to either bad or good outcomes. The game has multiple standalone episodes, each with two acts: before and after summoning. If a character dies before summoning, you lose. But once the Elder One is on the board, as long as one player is alive, there's a chance to win. Cthulhu: Death May Die is a cooperative board game. Cultists are summoning an Elder One to destroy the world. It's up to the investigators to face the nightmare forces, disrupt the ritual, and kill the Elder One. Designed by Rob Daviau and Eric M. Lang, with monster art by Adrian Smith and investigator art by Karl Kopinski. Investigators have unique and generic skills. They start with a diagnosed insanity that can be triggered by occult encounters. The closer to losing your mind, the more powerful your skills. Fanatic cultists are summoning the Elder Gods, and they're aided by nightmarish monsters. These enemies have special abilities and their behavior is triggered by Mythos cards. The core box has modular elements. Players choose an Elder One and an Episode. Each box has unique figures, tokens, and cards. The Mythos deck combines cards from the chosen boxes. Episodes indicate map setup and new actions for investigators. They also have Discovery cards with different challenges and rewards. The Elder Ones start off - board. As they move on the summoning track, they bring chaos and insanity. If the ritual is disrupted, they become vulnerable and can be killed. Otherwise, investigators face an immortal behemoth. Killing the Elder One is tough as it gets stronger when beaten. The core box includes 45 plastic figures, 17 terrain tiles, 30 tentacle tokens, 8 custom dice, 5 counter bases, 10 investigator dashboards, 186 cards, 120 tokens, and 1 rulebook. Note: the rulebook is a work in progress. Backers with the Unspeakable Pledge get the core box, the exclusive 'Julia' Investigator, and all stretch goals. Julia can take wounds instead of stress, increasing her success chances but maybe at the cost of her life. We're glad to back campaigns like this. To play Cthulhu Death May Die, first choose an Elder One and an Episode from the core box. Combine the contents of the chosen boxes, including figures, tokens, and cards. Set up the map as indicated in the Episode. Each player selects an investigator with unique skills. Start the game as insane investigators. Roll the dice during the game and be careful, as improper rolls can trigger your insanity. Try to disrupt the cultist's ritual to summon the Elder One. If a character dies before the summoning, the game ends and you lose. Once the Elder One is on the board, keep at least one player alive to have a chance to win. Use Discovery cards to get resources, companions, or face challenges. After each game, store the figures, tiles, tokens, and cards properly in the core box to keep them organized. Remember, the rulebook is a work in progress, so some rules might change. If you have the Unspeakable Pledge, don't forget to include the exclusive 'Julia' Investigator in your game. And be aware that the figures come unpainted, so you can paint them as you like.
